Emirates pushes Premium Economy up as Business gets sliced up
Airlines can no longer rely on passenger growth alone. Skift puts it plainly: the fight now is over the traveler willing to pay more per ticket. And Emirates, as almost always, is leading the charge.
My read is that the Dubai carrier is using its Premium Economy as bait to pull passengers away from the traditional Business class. Business has split into a thousand products: low-cost carriers sell it, Gulf airlines discount it, and it even gets squeezed on short-haul routes. Emirates needs margin, and it is looking for it in that middle ground where the leisure traveler pays for space without reaching executive cabin prices.
Here is the lesson for the rest of the industry. Revenue management is no longer about raising the fare, it is about designing the exact product that separates the tourist with money from the executive who does not pay out of his own pocket. Emirates Premium Economy targets that exact tourist. Whoever is not redefining their cabins to catch that passenger will watch others take their margin away.
