Postcard Hotel Eyes 12 City Hotels With Private Clubs in India
Postcard Hotel is done being a brand of remote retreats only. Founder and CEO Kapil Chopra has told Skift the chain is preparing an urban format of nearly all-suite hotels, each with a private members' club built into the property, as reported by Peden Doma Bhutia in Skift. The first cities on the shortlist are Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and the company is already in talks at three locations. Chopra put it plainly: Postcard will come to the city "in a financially workable format," which in his terms means a prime location, a contained room count and the club inside the building.
Until now the 12-property portfolio, founded in 2018, has lived in destination settings, from Goa's beaches to Assam's tea estates and Gujarat's Gir Wild. Moving into cities flips the logic. A resort sells the escape. An urban hotel sells recurrence, and the club acts as the glue, turning a room into what is effectively a monthly fee.
The reading for the industry is straightforward. India's metros have a deep membership culture, but suite inventory and average rates in prime districts are steep. Putting a club inside the hotel lets Postcard monetize the same square metre twice: once for the night, once for the dues. It is also the most sensible way for a brand without a giant balance sheet to get into expensive ground without over-leveraging the project. Chopra says he is confident enough buyers will pay for it.
The risk is not the concept, it is execution. A club lives on the social mix of its members, and that chemistry does not transfer from a Goa resort to a Mumbai tower. Location, inventory size and membership pricing are the three variables that decide whether this is a real business or a nice idea.
Watch for which of the three talks closes first and at what hotel size. If Postcard gets the urban model right, plenty of boutique brands in the region will look at their own expansion plans differently.
